While the girls and I started our trip in St Louis and ended it in Milwaukee, we had a brief stopover in Chicago. It was all strategic, you see, and centered around the train. We took the Amtrak to Union Station, and not knowing how well Claire would travel and not knowing how well Evelyn could manage her stuff on her own, thought it best to get off in Chicago rather than go all the way to Milwaukee. The train was great – the girls were amazing – but I was honestly ready to get off in Chicago. A lay over would have been miserable.
Thankfully, my sister-in-law and her family live there. Owen flew home from business travel that afternoon, drove downtown to get us, then turned around to get Andrew from O’Hare. (He’s a rockstar.) Evelyn had a great time playing with her cousins during a lazy morning / afternoon, and we had the pleasure of introducing Claire to another Aunt & Uncle. As of today, everyone in the immediate family on both sides have met her. *pat on back* We also got a quick visit with a college roommate of mine, one of Evelyn’s Godmothers, who popped over with less than 24 hours notice. I’m still amazed that that worked out.
Evelyn loves mass transit and is an amazing helper. I couldn’t have been more proud of her, carrying her own bags – eating well – listening – giving plenty of Potty warning – and being understanding when I had a stressful moment. Having so much responsibility on the trip seemed to make an impact on her and she’s really proud of herself, too. In fact, as I type, Evelyn is utilizing her “quiet time” to play “Travel” with her babies. They are planning to fly to Kansas to visit friends, then take the train back to Seattle. Unfortunately, she just forgot to pack the potty and getting it made them miss their plane.
I couldn’t make this up if I tried.
